About

Hello, my name is Matthew Carpenter. I’m a senior software engineer based in the Boise, Idaho area with over a decade of experience building backend systems, cloud infrastructure, data pipelines, and distributed platforms. I have a broad technical background and a track record of picking up new domains quickly — whether that’s embedded IoT firmware, machine learning pipelines, or Kubernetes-native tooling.
Before software engineering, I studied Applied Mathematics at UC Berkeley and worked as a pricing analyst in the insurance industry, where I built predictive models and worked with large datasets. I also hold ACAS and CSPA actuarial designations. That analytical foundation shows up in how I approach engineering problems — careful about data, comfortable with ambiguity, and focused on getting the model right before optimizing the implementation.
I served four years in the United States Marine Corps, including combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. That experience shaped how I work on teams: directly, with a bias toward action, and with a clear sense of what actually matters under pressure.
Selected Experience
Blues Wireless — Senior Software Engineer (2022–2024) Designed data storage and retrieval software for embedded IoT device fleets. Built continuous ingestion pipelines from the Blues platform into Snowflake using AWS S3, SQS, and IAM. Architected CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions and led technical hiring.
Canopy Vision — Co-Founder & Lead Developer (2019–2022) Co-founded an AI-driven industrial monitoring startup. Built a full-stack intelligent video streaming platform in Go, React/TypeScript, Python, and C/C++. Designed and trained CNN image recognition models deployed for real-time inference on live industrial camera feeds. Delivered ML-powered monitoring solutions for mining and chemical processing operations.
Amazon — Software Engineer (2022–2023) Built backend tooling in Go for an internal CLI enabling researchers to provision high-performance AWS compute environments for genomics and bioinformatics workloads.
Comcast — Software Engineer (2023–2024) Developed backend systems in Go for Comcast’s customer-facing ISP speed test platform. Redesigned a bulk-load architecture into a streaming-based pipeline, significantly improving throughput. Integrated CouchDB for scalable, low-latency data persistence.
Intuit — Software Engineer (2023) Contributed to an internal incident management and alerting platform with integrations into Slack, Zoom, and AWS event-driven workflows.
